What to Write in a Sobriety Anniversary Card
A sobriety anniversary, or "sobriety birthday," marks something hard-won. A few honest lines in a card can mean as much as any gift. If you are not sure what to write, this guide offers original messages you can use as they are or make your own, organized by who you are and what milestone they are celebrating.
AA Big Book, Highlighted & AAmazingtabbed

A Few Guidelines Before You Write
Be specific. "I've watched you show up for other people this year" means more than "congratulations."
Focus on who they are today, not on their drinking or their past.
Keep it short. Three or four sincere sentences are plenty.
Protect their anonymity. Write the card for them, not for an audience. Keep "AA" off the envelope, and ask before posting anything about their sobriety on social media.
Get the count right. If you are not sure how long it has been, the AABlueBook sobriety calculator counts the days from their sobriety date.
Sign it personally. In the program, a first name and a phone number can be a gift in themselves.

"You kept showing up on the days you didn't feel like it. That's what this anniversary is made of. Happy sobriety birthday."

Frequently Asked Questions
What do you say to someone on their sobriety anniversary?
Keep it simple and sincere. Congratulate them, mention something specific you have noticed, and let them know you are glad they are here. A short, personal note means more than a long one.
Is it okay to say "congratulations" on a sobriety anniversary?
Yes. Many people in recovery welcome congratulations. Some prefer "happy anniversary" or "happy sobriety birthday." If you know their preference, use it.
Should I mention how many years they have been sober?
If they celebrate it openly, mentioning the milestone is usually welcome. In a public setting or on social media, let them share their own time and anniversary.
What should I write to my sponsor on their anniversary?
Thank them for something specific: a call, a hard conversation or a moment that helped you. Sponsors often keep these cards for years.
